Christ Church seeks to serve the English speaking community in Naples, although the doors are open to all who seek a place to worship. The church is part of the Church of England’s Diocese of Europe which has over 150 Chaplaincies throughout Europe.

Following a gift of land by Giuseppe Garibaldi, the church was built in 1863 in the aftermath of the unification of Italy and the overthrow of the Bourbon Kingdom of Naples. Public conscription and government funds contributed to the fine neo-gothic building, designed perhaps more as a statement of British power than to meet the needs of a potential congregation.

Our congregation is mainly drawn from the Anglican Church and the Episcopal Church of America, but members of all Christian churches find a home at Christ Church. As we write the congregation has British, Irish, American, Canadian, Indian, New Zealand, Sri Lankan, Nigerian, Ghanaian, and Italian members.

The Chaplaincy is responsible for the Anglican presence in the whole of mainland Southern Italy, and regular services are also held in Sorrento, Bari and Capri.

The principle service and the focus of our life is the celebration of the Holy Eucharist every Sunday in Christ Church at 10 AM. A Sunday School is available for the younger members of the church and is integral in the life of the church. Sundays at 5 PM the Eucharist is celebrated in the Cathedral Church in Sorrento, thanks to the kindness of the Archbishop of Sorrento who allows us to use his beautiful cathedral.

All the principal feasts of the church are celebrated and there is a strong strong musical tradition which greatly enhances the worship. The musical tradition also extends to a series of professional concerts which are held throughout the year. We will recall here that the annual performance of the Messiah has become a highlight in the concert life of Naples.

The church is committed to the ecumenical movement in Naples, enjoying close ties with the Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Waldensian and Lutheran churches. In fact, local protestant churches often use Christ Church when they need the beauty of the church building to enhance their worship.

The church facilities are used by a variety of layman organizations which seek to care for the English Speaking communities in Naples. Organisations from the local community also are welcome; for example Christ Church currently hosts the meetings of AA groups (both Italian and English speaking).
